Hainan Golf Journey
There are 24 golf courses on the island of Hainan making it an ideal destination for avid golfers. Of course, not all have been created equally, so with the help of Nice Golf and GolfPlus One we visited the island to check out and play a selection of the best courses there. Here are the OB Golf & Lifestyle Hainan Highlights:
The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula (West Course)
Featuring 36 holes (West and East Course), the Dunes, which is built entirely on natural sand is Tom Weiskopf’s first signature design in China. Weiskopf has artfully laid down a green carpet between bunkers, transitional areas and rock chunks to create some unforgettable holes hugging the South China Sea.
The West Course is popular and hence generally busier than the East since it has received numerous acknowledgements worldwide. One of the most spectacular views on the West Course can be found on the 16th hole. This 434-yard long par-4 trails along the edge of a wide deserted beach on the Ocean’s fringe providing it with the background accompaniment of the crashing waves.
With its pure sand base, sea views, glorious beaches, and dramatic rocky outcrops the West Course at Shenzhou Peninsula attracts golfers from near and far. With the magnificent natural settings of both 18-hole courses, it’s no wonder that the Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula is considered one of China’s best new courses.

Dragon Valley Golf Course
Located high up in Nandingzhong Village, Dragon Valley Golf Course is surrounded by wooded hills and misty mountains. Dragon Valley was designed by Schimdt-Curley, the same team behind Haikou’s famed Missions Hills Golf Club, but it’s worth noting that the layout is a little more forgiving for those with higher handicaps. There are no blind holes and the course boasts plenty of wide greens and flat-bottomed bunkers to balance out play.
Open: 2010 (West Course)
Yardage: 7,173 yards
Address: Nandy Village, Tiandu Town, Sanya, Hainan, China
Sanya Forest Valley GC
Sanya Forest Valley Golf Club is a mountain golf course featuring Hainan’s lush tropical rainforest and a natural lake. To present an intelligent and challenging golf course, the designers, ATDL, decided to work with the tranquillity of nature. By keeping the natural surroundings the course is balanced and harmonious with its surroundings. Working with the original features of the landscape, the golf course has been built with reasonable fairway layouts and smooth curves to satisfy golfers of various levels.
Yardage: 6,923 yards
Address: Ganzaling Tropical Plants and Animals Tourism Zone, Forest Valley, Jiyang District, Sanya
Yalong Bay Golf Club
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Yalong Bay is named after the son of a dragon king in Chinese mythology. The links-style course consists of waterfalls and coconut palms, amongst other tropical features. The course serves up a challenge in the form of almost 100 bunker "beaches" that were inspired by the nearby sandy ocean beaches. A winding river meanders through the course to create an additional hazard to be wary of on several holes.
