George Crowned Inaugural Champion
After a long and tiring journey, George Gandranata was crowned champion of the inaugural national professional match play.
There was something different about George Gandranata’s celebration when he defeated Peter Gunawan 1-up in the final of the Gunung Geulis Match Play Championship 2018 sponsored by Credit Suisse. George knelt down on the ground and took a praying position.
"For me, this victory is very meaningful. I have been waiting for a moment like this. Several times I was near to the title but failed. My shot was not sharp, but I was still given the opportunity by God to be the champion. Therefore, I am very grateful,” said George.
After playing for three days, George finally donned the green jacket awarded for the winner of the Gunung Geulis Match Play Championship 2018 which was opened to professionals for the first time this year.
George headed into the finals having beaten Hendri Nasim 2-up, while Peter Gunawan’s surprise 3&2 defeat of Adrian Halimi in the semi-final on Thursday morning led him there. After resting for an hour, both players headed out on to the course for the final match.
Peter initially took the lead after winning two holes, the 7th and 8th, but failed to keep a hold of it over the next two holes. George took a point on the 11th and 12th but Peter then managed to steal a point on the 15th, however, George held his nerve and with it the 1-up advantage to the final hole.
“This match play is a unique format. We are dealing with one player from hole to hole. Therefore, I play more relaxed. I lost 2-down… nevermind, I can fix it on the next hole. However, today I can indeed catch up on the back nine since the semi-final round,” said George, who took home the winning prize of IDR40 million. “All players from a round of 32 were tough opponents and provide [this] experience. In the final, Peter has shown remarkable development. I lift my hat to Peter’s game.”
