Penalty Stops Playoff
Danny Masrin closed the 2018 season of Indonesian Golf Tour by finally claiming another title. Battling Elki Kow, Danny won by a single stroke.
Elki Kow had high hopes of winning The 2018 Grand Final Indonesian Golf Tour. Starting the final round, overnight-leader Elki was five-shots ahead of Danny Masrin who had collected a total of 5-under for two days. However, Danny immediately applied an attack strategy to close the gap.
Two birdies and one eagle, while Elki only made two birdies, helped Danny to attenuate the score difference to three shots after the front nine. Then, Elki dropped a shot on the 10th hole, reducing his lead over Danny to just a shot. On the 16th, a bogey caused Danny to fall to two-shots behind.
However, on the next hole, Danny managed to equalize Elki’s score after making his second eagle of the day. Both players were now 11-under going into the final hole. Elki’s first shot sent the ball past the red stakes incurring him a penalty. Elki finished the final hole with a bogey, while Danny managed even-par to win the title by one shot over Elki.
"Because I was five-shots back from Elki, I set an attack strategy starting the final round: getting as many scores under as possible in the first nine holes. It worked. I was only three shots back. After the 10th I was only one shot back. On the 18th, we tied at the top of the leaderboard on 11-under. I was actually ready for the playoff. However, Elki got a penalty, and it changed everything,” said Danny.
Elki's chance to win the second IGT title this season vanished and he had to settle for second. Despite the disappointing finish, Elki was still satisfied with his play at the three-day event.
"Regardless of the penalty on the 18th hole, I was quite satisfied with my game today. My score (10-under) has exceeded my expectations when I started playing here. What happened today provided a positive lesson for me," he explained.
